Franco-German Projects Drucken E-Mail
Adenauer and de Gaulle initiated it, Kohl and Mitterand continued it, and – at least mostly – Merkel and Sarkozy rely on it: the Franco-German partnership. However, the bi-national cooperation is not only appreciated in politics but also in science journalism. The Chair of Science Journalism in Dortmund and the Chair of Communication scientifique et technique in Strasburg are partners in the international training of future science journalists.

The chair of Science Journalism cooperates with Université Louis Pasteur since winter term 2005/2006. Once a year Prof. Holger Wormer and Dr. Eric Heilmann prepare a Franco-German project on science journalism. Their first piece of teamwork was the one-week seminar in Berlin in February 2006 dealing with “genetic tests and ethics”. Among the participants were students of journalism and science journalism from Dortmund and master students of Communication scientifique et technique from Strasburg. The esprit franco-allemand shaped the seminar. Right in Berlin it was decided to continue the partnership.

The cooperation between Dortmund and Strasburg follows the tradition of the political and cultural Franco-German partnership. Besides, the bi-national projects reflect the international character of science journalism itself. France was chosen partner with the intention to promote the reporting about research and science from our European neighbours. At present the media coverage is dominated by science news from the US.

Spotlight brain, Strasburg 2007
It is pretty odd: Just the organ we understand all the things in nature with is so far not well understood itself. As the human brain poses a challenge to research it is an interesting object for science journalists. During the “International Brain Awareness Week” in March 2007 students from the Institute of Journalism in Dortmund travelled to Strasburg. Together with students from Université Louis Pasteur they learnt about the latest research in neuroscience. >> more (de)

Genetic tests and ethics, Berlin 2006
Germans are against technology and French people love nuclear power and gene technology. Are these clichés true? Based on “genetic tests” as an example, scientists and journalists from Germany and France reported about research and ethical debates in both countries in Schloss Genshagen near Berlin. Students from Strasbourg, Dortmund and Leipzig discussed with experts and practiced different kinds of journalistic work from interview to reportage. >> more (de)
