Projects: The Combination of Teaching, Research and Practice Drucken E-Mail
One of the Chair’s central goals is the connection of research, teaching and journalistic practice. In science journalism this almost always means to build a bridge between natural scientific or technical matters, investigation and transfer. The following projects are examples for the ideal combination of these facets. Among them are educational research projects, a series of guest lectures or even editorial cooperations with top media. Important finding: project-related education often is not only more effective but more fun!

Expert Meeting on Science Journalism in Europe

Do we need a European magazine reflecting on science journalism? In February 2008, academics and science journalists met at the Brost-Institute for International Journalism in Dortmund to address this question on the initiative of WPK, the German Science Journalists' Association, and the Chair of Science Journalism. The discussion focused on two aspects: the general concept and need for a European magazine as well as the topic for a pilot issue. New! The first issue of "Science Journalism in Europe" was published on 15 July 2008 and was presented at ESOF 2008 in Barcelona. >> more (en)

Atlantic Transfer Conference

Atlantic Transfer – Great Ideas are Mobile” was the motto of the international conference about science journalism which took place in New York on October 6, 2006. The program was about the question how journalists can present scientific subjects to the public. Science journalists from well-known media in Germany and the USA discussed the topic. The Chair of Science Journalism had organized the event together with ConRuhr, the liaison office of the Ruhr-Universities. Parts of that international project are documented in English. >> more (en)

European Science Guide

Creating a map of the jungle of European research – that was the subtitle of the educational research project European Science Guide. The students attended the science conference ESOF2006 in Munich. They created journalistic products for the online travel guide and tested the results on the target group. The guide will be revised and completed during the ESOF2008 in Barcelona. The project is supported by the VolkswagenStiftung and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI). >> more (en/de)

Computer Assisted Reporting

Computer assisted reporting is a special kind of investigative journalism. In this field journalists evaluate publicly available databases to uncover information for top stories. In July 2007 the Chair of Science Journalism hold a seminar about “officemate Internet and computer assisted reporting – how to use computers for journalistic investigation”. The students learnt basics about data analysis and discussed the chances and risks of the challenging technique. Brant Houston, professor for journalism in the USA and CAR-expert, came to Universität Dortmund to act as a teacher.  >> more (en/de)

Franco-German Partnership

The Franco-German partnership shapes the project programme of the study course Science Journalism. The chair in Dortmund cooperates with Université Louis Pasteur in Strasburg where students with a grade in natural sciences can complete the master’s studies Communication Scientifique et Technique. Once a year the chairs organize a Franco-German seminar. The first project “genetic tests and ethics” took place in Berlin in 2006. The following year the topic “spotlight brain” was chosen for a seminar in Strasburg. >> more (en/de)

The Wissensmacher

The makers as guests in Dortmund: top-media science journalists, experts of public relations from DFG (German Research Foundation) and MPG (Max-Planck-Society) and exhibition designers report about their daily but not ordinary work. The students learn about the variety of the job directly from practice and establish contact with the media. Listeners from other departments contribute to the interdisciplinary character of the series of guest lectures which takes part every winter term – since 2006/2007 in cooperation with Universität Witten/Herdecke. Since autumn 2006 some of the articles can be found in a book from VS-Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften. >> more (de)

Biochemistry – Totally Journalistic

Formulas and technical jargon – what to do when the lecture is too complicated but important? A case for future science journalists! Five students have transformed parts of the lecture biochemistry into a colloquial form. The result: easily served tidbits of biochemistry – but more than just tidbit-journalism. It is about the talking molecules of life, the chemistry of perms or the researcher Axel Schweiß. In the second part of the educational research project experts as well as laypersons were asked about this “lecture script” of the journalistic kind – with astonishing results. >> more (de)

Work Group WDR Telecast Quarks & Co

The WDR (West German broadcasting corporation) telecast “Quarks & Co” with Ranga Yogeshwar is one of the most famous science formats in German television. Since 2005, the Chair of Science Journalism cooperated with this science programme several times. The "Quarks" work group wrote articles for the accompanying scripts, and was involved in the planning of the telecasts. >> more (de)

do-camp-ing

The event do-camp-ing at Universität Dortmund offers manifold insights into engineering science study courses. During a one-week tent camp sixth form pupils can work on technical projects and get information about the different subjects. The Chair of Science Journalism offers a journalistic project where the participants report about work, ideas and backgrounds of the engineering projects. The taster course is directed to all interested in the course Science Journalism and gives an insight into the minor subject engineering science. >> more (de)
