On this page we introduce some of the institutions with which the Chair of Science Journalism cooperates in concrete projects. Furthermore, with regard to the one-year editorial traineeship the Institute of Journalism cooperates with more than 40 media companies in Germany.

In 2002 the Bertelsmann Stiftung (Bertelsmann Foundation)
initiated the “Qualification Program Science Journalism”, an extensive
package of education and further education offers for journalists and
scientists. Right from the beginning the professor for Science
Journalism consultatively supported the project and took an active part
in organizing seminars. The Bertelsmann Stiftung on the other hand has
been funding the activities of the Chair of Science Journalism since
2005. Overall this led to a trustful partnership with the common goal
to improve critical and competent science-journalistic coverage in
Germany. At the time of project conclusion in 2007 the central findings
and results of the project are to be published in a book.

As the second huge partner the VolkswagenStiftung (Volkswagen
Foundation) is also involved in the “Qualification Program Science
Journalism”. At the Dortmund chair the VolkswagenStiftung especially
supports projects concerning the internationalization of the course –
among them, for example, an interdisciplinary education research
project with ten students related to the Euroscience Open Forum in
Munich in July 2006. It has also partly funded the evaluation and
development of the curriculum “Medicine for Journalists”, which has
been prepared in cooperation with the Universität Witten/Herdecke.

The WDR (West German broadcasting corporation) telecast “Quarks & Co”
with Ranga Yogeshwar is without doubt one of the most popular science
formats in German television. For each of the elaborately designed
telecasts a script is published – since summer 2005 in cooperation with
the “Quarks seminar”, which has been established for this purpose at
the Chair of Science Journalism. The students investigate, write texts
for the script and the internet presence of the telecast, propose
topics and deal out criticism. During the accompanying seminar the
texts are edited. That way the students get an insight into the real
production conditions and into the course of a professional scientific
editorial office.

Universität Witten/Herdecke cooperates with Universität Dortmund
in respect to this course. In Witten/Herdecke Dortmund students with
the study focus bioscience/medicine are educated in medicine. On this
basis a tailor-made medicine curriculum for science journalists is to
be further developed. Common lectures and the exchange of students are
also part of the cooperation.

“Communication scientifique et technique” is the name of the postgraduate course at Université Louis Pasteur
where scientists are trained to become experts for scientific news.
Their occupational fields can be science journalism but also work in a
press office, in a museum or in specialist publishing houses. In
February 2006 students from Strasbourg took part in a
science-journalistic 6-day seminar together with Dortmund students from
the Institute of Journalism. The "esprit franco-allemand "strongly
influenced this seminar about genetic tests and ethics. In spring 2007 a
neuroscientific project followed, which was held during the “Semaine du
Cerveau” (Brain Awareness Week) in France. The German-French cooperation
is continued in annual projects.

The Fraunhofer-Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing
(SCAI) in Sankt Augustin (Bonn) engages in computer simulations in
product and process development and is a strong partner in industry.
SCAI designs and optimizes industrial applications and does
calculations on high-performance computers. In the education research
project “ESOF – Research Guide Europe” the institute has been
cooperating with the Chair of Science Journalism since April 2006.
After visiting the European science meeting ESOF 2006 in Munich future
science journalists and students of journalism are producing a European
science guide. The experts from Bonn support the students with an
innovative professional web page.
