Journalistic Career

Since 1986 freelance journalist working for the Rheinische Post at first. Then traineeships and/or freelance work for P.M.-Magazin and P.M.-Perspektive, Südwestfunk television, public relations of the Verlag Chemie (Wiley-VCH, science publisher), Deutsche Presseagentur (German Press Agency), Süddeutsche Zeitung. The journalistic work was partly sponsored by fellowships from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (a joint initiative of German industries to promote science and higher education) and the Fonds of the Chemische Industrie.

From February 1996 until November 2004 editor in the science department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (foci medicine, gene technology, bioethics, ethic and fraud in research, chemistry and environment). Later working as a freelance journalist.

Since January 2007 regular freelance work for WDR Radio.

October/November 1999 further education abroad at the Libération and L’Express in Paris (sponsored by a fellowship from the Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk (Franco-German Youth Office).

Journalistic awards of the Friedrich-Deich-Stiftung (Friedrich Deich Foundation) and the Bayerische Akademie für Suchtfragen (Bavarian Academy of Dependency Matters).


Studies

From October 1989 until July 1995 study of chemistry in Heidelberg, Ulm and Lyon as well as philosophy as a minor subject; Master's degree in July 1995 (master’s thesis “Global Pollutant Flows in the Atmosphere”, professor Karlheinz Ballschmiter).
 
 
Teaching and Research

  • lectureships/seminars at the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München, Universität Klagenfurt, Akademie der Bayerischen Presse (Academy of the Bavarian Press), Henri-Nannen-Schule (school for journalists in Hamburg), education and further education at WDR (West German broadcasting corporation)
  • consultant and course leader in the “Qualification Program Science Journalism” of the Bertelsmann-Stiftung (Bertelsmann Foundation) as well as for the “Heureka”-seminar
  • media training for scientists (among others for the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (Max-Planck-Society)
  • member of the DFG’s (German Research Foundation) ethic workshop of the priority programme “Stem Cells”
  • expert consultant for the European Science Foundation (ESF)
  • member of the selection committee for the DFG Communicator Award 2008
  • member of the selection committee for the Peter Hans Hofschneider Investigation Award in scientific and medical journalism
